Race with Sonic and his friends

No other video game character seems to be better suited to star in their very own racing game than the speedster hedgehog Sonic, himself. Team Sonic Racing is the third racing game developed by Sumo Digital and published by Sega which is set in the colorful Sonic universe. Unique amongst its peers in the racing game genre for having a focus on teamwork, Team Sonic Racing will satisfy your need for speed while also letting you bond with your friends and family.

The Return of Sonic and Friends

As mentioned above, this isn’t the foray of Sonic into racing games, but it’s still great to see the gang once again on another new adventure. Team Sonic Racing features 15 characters from the Sonic universe and their unique personalities and voices shine even through the fast-paced gameplay. The fifteen characters are divided into five groups: Team Sonic, Team Dark, Team Rose, Team Vector, and Miscellaneous. Team Sonic is comprised of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. Team Dark has Shadow the Hedgehog, E-123 Omega, and Rouge the Bat. In Team Rose we have Amy Rose, Chao, and Big the Cat. Team Vector has Blaze the Cat, Silver the Hedgehog, and Vector the Crocodile. Finally, we have Dodonpa, Metal Sonic, Dr. Eggman, and Egg Pawn as miscellaneous characters.

Team-based Mechanics

Unlike most racing games, the focus of Team Sonic Racing is not to win the gold for yourself but to work together with your team to win the gold together. Indeed, there are times when the player that finishes first won’t actually win the game because the rest of their team lagged too badly behind and the entire team was dragged down.

A lot of the mechanics involve some form of teamwork in order to gain an advantage over the other teams. For example, there is the Slingshot ability that gives players a speed boost when they draft behind their teammate’s slipstream. There is also the Item Box Transfer that lets players give items to their teammates when they’re in need of help.

Play With Teams

Although the game does have a single-player and story mode, the team-based mechanics are still in place so you really have to learn how to play with others in order to enjoy this game completely, even if it is just with an AI character.

Of course, playing with a large group is the best way to actually play this game. Thankfully, Team Sonic Racing does support both local and online multiplayer. In local multiplayer, you can play with up to four people in a shared split screen. In online multiplayer, on the other hand, you can play with up to twelve people.

Fun With Friends

Team Sonic Racing was developed to be a fun party game to enjoy with your friends and family. It has a lot of team-based mechanics that will never let you be a lone wolf in the game. If you’re thinking of a nice game that everyone in the family will enjoy, Team Sonic Racing is a good option to try.

PROS

  • Supports online and local multiplayer
  • Great art
  • Nice voice acting

CONS
